Hobby Update: Lords of the Wild

Hey folks, welcome back!

Today, I finished another three points of elves for my SAGA Age of Magic's Lords of the Wild warband. These guys were the last big "push" on my warband (fatal last words, I know), as they were twelve mounted minis (so twenty four in reality, counting horses).
 A potential, albeit not optimized, eight point warband.

 In theory, these mounted hearthguard will form the backbone of my warband, the real "Death Star" of my force. I happened to paint twelve, since that's what came in the pack from Ral Partha, but I imagine eight will be the number normally seen on the tabletop. I'm hoping to run these in tandem with my mounted warlord, providing a flurry of arrows from their composite bows. I've used this strategy with my Undead chariots (see this blog for more info) and found it to be highly effective. To be realistic, I actually am sure these mounted hearthguard cannot be as effective as the Undead chariots, but c'est la vie.

Currently, I'm working on twelve javelin levy miniatures. These will add another point to my force, though I'm not sure how to use them quite yet. Once they are complete, I'll most likely start my dragon (Scourge) followed by six centaurs (quadrupedal creatures). I may creature a warlord mounted on flying beast as well, but only time will tell!

Hobby Update: Sea Inlets and Chasms

Hello and welcome back to the blog! This entry will focus on two pieces of terrain I recently worked on, a chasm and a sea inlet. These were both challenging pieces, though for very different reasons.  Step 1: Bases To begin any terrain project (well, except for maybe hills), you'll need a good base to work on. I use around 3/16" MDF sheets which can be found at most large home improvement or hardware stores.  First step is to plan out the base sizes and shapes. I normally do this with a black magic marker to help guide my cuts and to make the most use of my materials. Once the bases are planned out, it's cutting time. I tend to do my first rough cuts using a table saw. Table saws are pretty big, scary, and dangerous, especially when working with smaller pieces of material. Also, table saws are not intended for making curved cuts, so, while I use it for this myself, I can't safely recommend it. My second cuts are done with a handheld jigsaw. This is not my favorite too

SAGA Age of Magic: The Great Kingdoms vs The Horde

Welcome back for another game of SAGA Age of Magic. Today, I played an 8 pt game against my friend Matt. Matt's new to the game and hobby overall, but he's quickly learning how to roll the bones. Rather than complicate things via the Book of Battles, we chose to play a standard game of  Clash of Warlords . The Narrative: The Outlands are on fire. All along the horizon, columns of smoke herald the coming of unspeakable monstrosities. These are enemies without remorse, fear, or mercy. A cold, clammy dread seizes the heart of The Protectorate as wide eyed, blood soaked survivors spread tales of raids, massacres, and unearthly terror. Sworn to protect the meek, His Order of the Ebon Cross is roused and readied in the panoply of war. Prayers are spoken, oaths taken, and weapons anointed. Gather 'round and listen to a tale of noble knights and fickle fortunes! In this battle report, we'll be again chronicling a battle between Brettonia and The Empire, this time at 1200 pts. The Armies Brettonian Army Paladin - General 95pts -Barded Warhorse -Lance -Shield -Virtue of Discipline (1st) Paladin - Battle Standard Bearer 74 pts -Barded Warhorse Paladin 136 pts -Royal Pegasus -Lance -Shield -Virtue of Noble Disdain (1st) 8x Knights of the Realm 216 pts 8x Knights of the Realm 216 pts 8x Knights of the Realm 216 pts 5x Mounted Yeomen 87 pts 10x Peasant Bowmen Skirmishers 70 pts -Shields Field Trebuchet 90 pts Of course, I can't speak for Mike's strategy, but if I had to guess, I would say the strategy was in true Brettonian fashion; hit hard with the lance formations of knights and their embedded heroes. The trebuchet would keep me from getting too comfortable or at least punish my forces for not engaging in melee. The mounted yeomen could counter march blocking
